I had a situation come up with my daughter’s Halloween costume that made me reflect about cultural appropriation; and in particular what I have taught my daughter on the topic.
While I recognize that it is okay for us to appreciate someone else’s culture, it is not okay for us to consume aspects of a culture for which its people can experience racism, xenophobia, discrimination and more for. Teaching our children to be empowered and aware humans means educating them on these topics from a young age, and Halloween is a key time to have these conversations.
