As a result of instabilities caused by the pandemic, many children are currently requiring more educational support than ever before. While we know that our children will eventually learn to read, write, do math and other skills, it is important to reach out for support if our children need it as that support goes beyond the applied skills, tutoring can support with their self steem, confidence and overall experience within educational contexts.
As a result, it was wonderful to connect with Gabrielle Crichlow of A Step Ahead Tutoring Services to learn more about how we can help and support our children through tutoring. Gabrielle is an incredibly dedicated educator who provided us with valuable insight about when we should invest in tutoring for our kids, how tutoring can benefit them, and more.
Gabrielle Crichlow is the esteemed captain of A Step Ahead Tutoring Services. She brings a wealth of academic excellence as well as a proven record of tutoring.
Gabrielle received her master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from St. John’s University in 2015. While she attended the university, she worked for two “supplemental education services” companies that partnered with New York City schools. Because they partnered with the schools, she was able to provide between 20 and 26 free hours of tutoring to students every year. While she was working at both companies, she saw the academic struggles of low-income and middle-income families that were disproportionately African-American, Hispanic, and South Asian. She believed that the allotment of hours – 20 to 26 hours of tutoring for the entire year – was definitely not enough for them. Furthermore, Gabrielle believed that these students tended to be misdiagnosed with learning disabilities, almost illiterate, and undereducated. She reached a point when she realized that these students deserved more than the limited services these companies offered them. It was at this moment that a light bulb went off in her head – “I’ll start my own company!” Gabrielle’s experiences in graduate school provided her with the insight she needed to excel at and enjoy tutoring, while inspiring other tutors to do the same. Then she founded A Step Ahead Tutoring Services in 2013 and has operated it ever since.
A Step Ahead Tutoring Services offers quality tutoring services for children and youth. They’re a team of private tutors available where and when you need them. Since 2013, they’ve been committed to being the best at what they do, serving their students and families by not just meeting your expectations, but exceeding them.
In October of 2022, Gabrielle invited me to be a guest on her Hot Topics Podcast where we chatted about my education experience, particularly how my immigrant journey and identity affected my experience within the Canadian, and Ontario, education context.
